Mar Adentro

After hours of struggling in vane to find a way to wrap the day up in a bit more less disastrous  manner, this movie caught my eye which I had long been yearning to watch, only to back off in the last minute ! Here it is, the breathtaking magnificent portray of passionate love, drama and ...life:

The Sea Inside

What a world of wonder. A true masterpiece by Alejandro Amenabar starring one of the greatest actors, Javier Bardem. The real life story of a tetraplegic  Spaniard, Roman Sampedro, in his late forties, fighting against the law, religious institution and the morality to redeem hisright to end his own life with dignity, euthanasia.  Having spent 27 years in anguish, pain and suffering in such a helpless dependent crippled condition which he then would say is the reason behind his bitter smiles, he decides to once and for all put an end to this. Only.

He says: "death is the start of my life" and replies to the priest who insists,"...Ramon, my friend, a freedom that eliminates life is not freedom...."; with ".... And a life that eliminates freedom is not life either...".
The movie explores Ramon's relationships with two women, Julia, a blond lawyer in support of his protest who also suffers from DMD, and Rosa, a younger local woman who wants to "convince" him that life is "worth" it. The sensational, other worldly gift of sharing love between them only begs tears.

Although he wants to die, he encourages everyone to understand the true meaning and preciousness of life. And even though he could not move a single finger, he was indeed able to move other people, their lives and ultimately, their destiny.
Quoting from his last poem, The sea inside:

The sea inside, the sea inside
And in the weightlessness of the bottom
where dreams come true
two wills come together to make a wish come true
Your look and my look
like an echo repeating, without words
Deeper, deeper
beyond everything through the blood and the bones
But I always wake up and I always wish I’d be dead
to stay entangled in your hair

In the blue

Here is to you, the stranger from paradise,
Whoever you are, wherever you are,
Here is to your healing eyes,
Your pacifying smile,

I will always be grateful to you ... Stranger from paradise...
